Creams and fondants are either rolled into balls and dipped in chocolate or heated and poured into a chocolate shell. They are then sealed and left to cool. The flavors of the cream as made from liquors and extracts mostly. Fruit flavors, maple, vanilla, and coconut are popular flavors.
My favorite brand of Cream Filled Chocolates is Russell Stover. By far the better than Whittman’s in my opinion. (Although nothing can compete with See’s Chocolate).
Russell Stover began in the kitchen of Russell William Stover and his wife Clara Stover in 1923. They were first sold locally (Colorado) under the name “Mrs. Stover’s Bungalow Candies.” As Russell Stover candies emerged as a huge business they became the first popular second tier chocolate company. Top-Tier chocolates use no preservatives and have a short shelf life and are very expensive. Russell Stover provided quality chocolate that wasn’t actually great, but it was the greatest non-to-great candy of its time. And one of the first! (that’s wordy but i’m pretty sure it makes sense) It was a quality moderately priced average candy.
Russell Stover makes their chocolates in small batches to ensure quality.
Russell Stover was the first company to put out a heart shaped box for Valentine’s Day. So it is only fitting to get a nice heart-shaped box of Cream Filled Chocolates to celebrate today’s food Holiday as well as Valentine’s Day.

Nice history of Russell Stover! It’s interesting to read how you approached each holiday, and which angle you took. I like that there are some differences between our blogs. I always try to read yours AFTER the fact, btw. I would hate to be influenced in advance. 🙂

Thanks! I should add to this though, because I learned today that Cadburry was actually the first confectionary company that attached candy with Valentine’s Day in a commercial way. Maybe they can’t claim the first heart shaped box. But they definitely promoted it!
I like reading your blog and comparing your approach to my year!! I love the passion you guys have for it. It’s sincere, and just as quirky as my own. I get so excited each night for a new post, although because of the time difference I find myself usually having to wait until the next day to read your posts.
I like that it forces me to revisit my memories, perhaps I should try and fill in the blanks after May to give you some more to read as time goes on.
