The recipe for a grilled cheese sandwich comes from the French recipe for Croque Monsieur (a grilled ham and cheese sandwich). American grilled cheese sandwiches became popular during the 1920’s.  It quickly became a diner specialty as well as a home favorite.  It’s simplicity led to its popular success.  In the 1920’s, they were made with only one slice of bread! Cheese sandwiches have always been around but it was this time when they were grilled and the cheese melted.  Thus making it a fancier fast cheap snack to make.  It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the top piece of bread was added which became the standard for grilled cheese sandwiches.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are among the most popular child-friendly lunch foods in the country.  I could have had a fancy Grilled Cheese today with falvourful interesting cheeses, or add ins like delicious bacon or tomato.  But I went for the classic American Grilled Cheese with american cheese.  I did used German Black Bread instead of white or wheat breadthough, so it kind of lost a bit of classic aesthetics because you cant see that classic buttered brown grilled sides on the bread slices.

April is also National Grilled Cheese Month.  Grilled Cheese is commonly accompanied with a nice bowl of tomato soup.
