Waffles date back to Ancient Greece, where they were known then as obelios.  Obelios were dough cooked between two hot plates.

The waffle we know today originates from wafers however.  Very light, crispy, thin cakes cooked between to wafer irons.  During Medieval Times it became popular to sell these wafers outside churches from a vendor for Saint’s Days and Feast Days.

Waffles were very popular in Holland and Belgium (a Belgian waffle has yeast and egg in the mix).  Pilgrims first brought the waffle to America.

Oatmeal and nuts make this a healthier version of the waffle, also with honey instead of sugar, and whole wheat flour instead of white flour I had quite a delicious and nutritious breakfast!
